Please visit for archived obituaries. DR. DAVID BIXLER NOVEMBER 15, 2005 David Bixler, 76, of North Fort Myers, FL, passed away November 15, 2005.

He was born January 7, 1929 in Chicago, IL to David C. and Mary a Bixler, who preceded him in death. Indiana's dental students were first introthe frontiers of duced.to, Dr. David Bixler, who created lU's Department of Oral Facial Genetics in 1971 and served as its chair until retirement in 1993. Considered many of his postdoctoral students as quintessential mentor, this witty, soft-spoken professor is best known by his nickname, "Dr.

The dental school's first "double doc," Dr. Bixler earned a PhD degree in zooloin 1956 and a DDS (with honors) in 1959 from IU. He also was a postdoctoral fellow with the U.S. Public Health Service in the late '50s and a ecipient of the Service's Career Development Award from 1967 to 1972. Much of the research undertaken in his department made possible with four consecutive five-year Institutional Training Grants awarded to Dr.

Bixler by the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR). As a member in IU's Department facultY, Medical Genetics, Dr. Bixler conducted genetic work-ups and counseled patients in the hospitals and then drew upon hose experiences to build a teaching program for dentistry. Studies focusing on clefts of the lip and were the cornerstone Bixler's palate. research program.

Data he recorded in the 1960s for geneticist Dr. Poul FoghAndersen during year Dr. Bixler spent as a visiting professor at the Institute of Medial Genetics in Copenhagen, Denmark, led to a series of IU research papers advancing Dr. Fogh-Andersen's theory that a single gene was influencing the occurrence of clefts. In the late '60s, Dr.

Bixler wrote about two sisters who exhibited an association of facial defects unique to the scientific literature at that time. Hypertelorism-microtiaclefting became known as HMC or Bixler syndrome. Only a few cases have since been reported in the world literature. Dr. Bixler is the author or co-author of 170 scientific articles and 14 textbook chapters.

He is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics, a member of Theta Theta Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society, and a recipient of the IUSD Alumni Association's Distinguished Faculty Award for Research. For seven years, he edited the section on oral diseases of the Birth Defects Encyclopedia. He was the first president of the Society of Craniofacial Genetics. Dr. Bixler was veteran of the U.S.

Army Air Force. He retired to Florida in 1994. David is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Gloria Bixler; children, David R. Bixler, Katherine Bedwell, R.

Saint Augustine GEORGE DEREK EDMEADES NOVEMBER 5, 2005 George Derek Edmeades, age 76, of Lehigh Acres, died November 5, 2005 under the loving care of Hope Hospice. He was born October 7, 1929 in East Ham, London, Enga George followed the family tradition as a Waterman Lighterman on the River Themes for 46 years. Upon moving to Lehigh Acres, Florida in 1988 he worked for many years as Warehouse Manager for Traffic Control Products, Fort Myers.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, his children from previous marriage, his devoted daughter Leslie and her husband Paul, his sons John and Derek all in England, as well as his stepson Douglas Rose and wife Susan of Merritt He leaves nine grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. He leaves two surviving brothers in England and one in New Zealand. George was Altar Assistant and Usher of Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Myers for many years. He was volunteer for V.O.I.C.E. as well as an avid bowler.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 20th, at 2:00 PM at Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church, 11381 Gateway Fort Myers, FL and at a later date at All Hallows by the Tower, London, England. MARJORIE ANN DILLON NOVEMBER 2, 2005 Marjorie Ann Dillon born June 22, 1934 in Lexington, Ohio passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 2, 2005 at the age of 71. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, sister and friend. She was one of twelve children who grew up in Lexington and Mansfield, Ohio. She was former employee of the United Steel Workers, United Telephone Company and Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation, before making Cape Coral, Florida her home 1984. She was former employee of the Cape Coral Lee County Library.

Mariorie is survived by her loving children, two daughters and son-in-law Marcia Bramhall, Marilyn Jean and Kevin McGee; two sons and Lorene daughters-in-law J. Moore; W. Timothy Brad and Lori Moore. Her twelve grandchildren include Brent, Sara and Tiffany Bramhall; Kevin, Kipp, Korey and Meaghan McGee; Matthew and Amanda Moore; Whitney, Justin and Trisha Moore.
